After a postponement ashore, a freshening late afternoon seabreeze provided a beautiful race for 32 boats at the J/24 Midwinter Championship at Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, FL. Mike Marshall’s American Garage won that contest in about 8 knots of wind, and Paul Foerster’s Grand Slam 2 came in second—enough to take control of the overall lead after four races with 7 points. The team from Heath, TX, including Mike Brown, Rob Johnston, Ryan Minth and John Skiles, has yet to place lower than second in any race. Tony Parker’s Bangor Packet dropped to second with 15 points, tied with Marshall’s American Garage. The robust Corinthian division of 18 boats is led by James Freedman’s LOL, who also lies fourth overall. Following Freedman is Al Constants’ Blitz and Steve Callison’s Whiskey River. Racing concludes Sunday. Photos are posted on the USA J/24 Class Facebook page, and complete results are available at https://yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eid=14856.
