In the 47th year of the J/24 East Coast Championship at Severn Sailing Association, 20 teams from the northeastern seaboard of the USA gathered to compete in this fall classic on the Chesapeake Bay. Following a six-race series, with one race allowed to be discarded, a long-time J/24 class veteran from Portland, Maine—now residing in Georgetown, MD—emerged victorious by a significant margin of 12 points. Tony Parker’s team, BANGOR PACKET, which included Zeke Horowitz, Jim Niblocki, Finn Hadlock and Andrea Fisher, posted an impressive record of 2-1-1-1-5-8, resulting in a net score of 10 points. It was a fight for the balance of the podium between five teams; second through sixth place were determined by the last race and a 5-point spread. After the dust settled , it was Pat Fitzgerald’s RUSH HOUR team (Kelly Fitzgerald, Mike Coe, Meredith Jacob and Emerson Smith) runner-up with a steadily improving record of 8-10-7-4-1-2 for 22 points net. Third place went to Joe Murphy’s ROCKSTAR with a 1-6-9-3-9-4 tally for 23 points net. The rest of the top five saw Aidan Glackin’s MENTAL FLOSS take fourth on a tiebreaker, at 26 points each, over Steve Callison’s WHISKEY RIVER. Winning the Corinthian Division was Callison’s team on WHISKEY RIVER (Sam Callison, Laura O’Brien, Tim Ambrose and Alex Pine). Second place was Mike Quaid’s ICE CUBE crew of John O’Rourke, Matt Bologna, Meredith Albers and Mike Chase. Third went to Sam McGuire’s UPGRADE team of Wes Marshall, Larry Leonard, Abby Brown and Andrew Lee. For more J/24 East Coast Championship information, visit http://j24eastcoastchampionship.com/.
