MISSION VIEJO, Ca (September 12, 2011) – Take Five took the J/24 win in the recent Audi Cup Charity Regatta, part of the Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta at the Dana Point Yacht Club.

Audi Mission Viejo sponsors the annual charity regatta, with proceeds benefitting the Ocean Institute.  The winning owners were awarded a one-of-a-kind Audi Cup trophy and each J/24 crew member will receive a personalized high-tech Audi Sport jacket for the victory.

Take Five, owned by Susie Taylor and Werner Horn and based in Marina del Rey, earned three wins, a second and a third place to earn the J/24 Audi Cup trophy over eight other competitors.

“We wanted the right side of the course in the first race on Saturday but our starting position didn’t give us the opportunity to do so,” said Horn. “We had to come from relatively deep in the fleet to struggle back into second place. In the second race we were trailing Within Reach in second place for the first two legs and were able to pass her at the first leeward mark rounding. Only in the third race did we have the start that we wanted and we were able to lead at every mark. We had a lousy start in the first race on Sunday. In the second race we were in second place for almost the entire race, only to pass Bullet on the last few yards before the finish for the win.”

Unseasonable rain, hail and thunderstorms greeted the startled sailors Saturday morning, creating confused seas and unpredictable wind. Sunday’s picture-perfect conditions were much more to the sailors’ liking.

“The entire weekend had light winds, which always makes the racing tricky, as you have to find the better breeze on the race course,” said Horn. “Sunday the conditions were more normal but still light.”

2011 marked the 13th consecutive year for the Dana Point Yacht Club’s Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta. The regatta has benefitted the Ocean Institute for the past five years, raising nearly $235,000 for student programs. The Ocean Institute, at the end of Dana Point harbor, has become nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental and ocean education programs.
