The annual J/24 U-Gotta Regatta, hosted by Fleet #1 and the Wayzata Yacht Club (WYC), was held on Lake Minnetonka October 4-6. J/24 Fleet #1 and WYC were also hosts of the J/24 U.S. National Championship held in June this year. 16 boats competed in seven races over two days of the regatta. Boats and crew members for the U-Gotta Regatta traveled from Duluth, MN and other parts of the Midwest. First place winner Oz was helmed by Olympic medalist Billy Allen. Other Oz crew included boat-owner Rolf Turnquist, who was instrumental in starting J/24 Fleet #1 in 1977. Placing second was Motorhome—helmed by Josh Bone. And third place went to Kattack—skippered by Tom Verburgt.Saturday morning’s start to the regatta was a cool 42 degrees with temperatures warming to 60 in the afternoon. Winds for the first race were light at 3-7 mph from the southeast. As the day progressed, winds increased to 12 mph. Sunday started in postponement waiting for the winds to pick up and wind direction to stabilize. By the second race on Sunday, the seventh race of the regatta, north winds increased to 14 mph. The competition was strong with many very close finishes. Only one point separated second-place boat Motorhome from third-place team Kattack. In fourth place, just two points from third place was Gotcha helmed by Tim Oelschlager with his nearly all female crew. A special thank you goes to Excelsior Brewing Company for providing exceptional craft beers. We’d also like to recognize the exceptional race management, led by PRO Dustin Breitner, and regatta volunteers for great food and parties. The Wayzata Yacht Club and the neighboring Minnetonka Yacht Club have a strong one-design mentality and Lake Minnetonka has a long history of highly-competitive sailboat racing. Lake Minnetonka—with 14,000 acres of water, 120 miles of shoreline and a depth averaging 40 to 113 feet—is well known for challenging winds, spirited sailboat racing and spectacular vistas.
