This past weekend was the 25th anniversary running of the Canandaigua Yacht Club’s JDaze Regatta, the traditional season opener for District 7. On Friday afternoon, Mike Ingham ran starting drills on the water. In the middle of the drills, someone noticed that a local yacht club member had fallen into the water while trying to board his 25-foot cruising boat. That person was unable to get back on board his boat (his ladder was not in the water) and had swamped his dinghy trying to crawl out of the water. Water temperature that day was in the low 40s! This individual was rapidly becoming hypothermic and was weakly calling for help when he was noticed in the water. Mike Ingham (all 150 pounds of him) ran over to give assistance in his 12-foot Boston Whaler and managed to drag the struggling 280 pounder out of the water and ran him ashore—literally saving that man’s life. In recognition of Mike’s valiant rescue, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel donated a free regatta shirt to Mike and we recognize him here as the J/24 Sailor of the month! If you know of any other J/24 Class member who has performed a selfless act or sportsmanship act deserving of recognition, please let us know and we will get the word out.
