Kris Werner raced Superfecta to victory in the 26-boat J/24 fleet at Charleston Race Week. The team won three of the seven races and threw-out a 14 for a total score of 16 points. Mike Ingham’s 5443 followed in second place with 20 points, and Ron Medlin Jr.’s Bash placed third with 27 points. The three-day regatta from April 19-21 saw blustery winds challenging the teams on Friday, before moderating on Saturday. Sunday racing was a no-go due to brutal winds and huge seas. The Charleston Race Week Trophy, awarded to the top boat in the most competitive one-design class, went to J/24 Class winner Kris Werner and his Rochester, NY-based crew on board Superfecta. The Jubilee Perpetual Sportsmanship Trophy went to local J/24 racer and the Commodore of CORA, Mike Palazzo. Palazzo and his Jo Mamma crew rescued a man overboard in Friday’s heated action and never approached the jury for redress. In fact, the skipper of the boat that lost the man overboard tried to do that on Palazzo’s behalf.
