What a great J/24 event at Davis Island Yacht Club and for the long-distance travelers who came to this event! They were treated to a weekend of great sailing, with the extreme being Chris Jackson’s Lucifer’s Hammer from Lake Lanier, GA. Over the previous week before the event at Davis Island Yacht Club (Tampa, FL), the wind had been hovering in the low to mid 20s with gusts into the 30s. By race time, the breeze had settled to a great 15 knot range with some gusts nearing the 20s. All boats sailed with genoas and powered through those higher gusts. With the forecast winds due to fade on Sunday, the RC, led by PRO Jamie Myers, pushed to get as many races in as possible, ending-up with six before calling it a day. From Florida YC, Team Tarheel led by Paul Abdullah posted a series of bullets broken by one second to Eamonn Delisser’s Main Squeeze team out of Coral Reef YC. Daze Off sailed by John Hirsch and Michael Beattie were in the top-three mix trading finishes with Main Squeeze. The host club was well represented by Seth Rosenthal on Dumpster Fire, biting at the heels of the lead pack. The breeze was full of phases from the left and right; timing these was important to staying toward the front of the pack. Saturday dawned bright with an 8-10 knot easterly hanging in there, which allowed for two more races to be sailed before shifting to the SE and starting to fade in the warm Tampa Bay temperatures at mid-day. Team Tarheel continued their winning ways, securing another pair of bullets to finish out the regatta and taking the title as 2021 District 10 Champions by a 10-point margin over Daze Off, with Main Squeeze two points back. Appreciation goes out to the RC team of Eric Robbins, Dave Ciesla, Aga Kasprzak and Meagan Wingrove, along with the regatta sponsors Greystone Investment Group, Horse Soldier Distillers, Grand Cathedral Cigars, Bay Canon Beer Company, Axiom Solutions, Martin Security Systems and Sapphire Shades and Shutters.
