It was a medley of weather conditions for the 33rd Annual Newport Regatta, hosted by Sail Newport on July 7-9 in Newport, RI. Typically the largest regatta of Newport’s summer sailing for one-design sailboats, the 600+ sailors got it all. On Saturday, the sunshine arrived with a moderate southerly which built to 15-17 knots for “Chamber of Commerce” conditions. Sunday, a light northwesterly shifted around to a light southwesterly. Over the afternoon, the southwesterly built for the five circles of racers. The 16 classes of one-design boats completed multiple races in winds in the upper teens. Overall, 177 boats competed on five areas of racing on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound. The sailors travelled from 24 U.S. States and three countries to participate. In the 11-boat J/24 fleet, Travis Odenbach’s HoneyBadger took the victory with 11 points, four ahead of John Mollicone’s Helly Hansen. Mike Ingham’s Nautalytics was just another notch back in third.
